Determination of the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in patients with epilepsy at the Department of Neurocritical Care, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in 2023

Abstract

Objectives: To describe depression, anxiety, stress among epilepsy patients in Department of Neurology and Neuro Intensive Care, VietDuc Hospital.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was performed, with a total sample of epilepsy patients (N=72). Data was collected using a questionnaire on patient’s characteristics, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale – 21.
Results: The results showed that the majority of patients have no symptoms of depression (86.15%), 12.5% of epilepsy patients had mild depression and 1.4% of patients had moderate depression. There were 91.7% of patients with no symptoms of anxiety, however, 8.4% of patients showed signs of anxiety ranging from mild to severe. There were 95.8% of patients without symptoms of stress, however, 4.2% of patients have symptoms of mild and moderate stress.
Conclusions: It is crucial for health care providers to pay more attention to epilepsy patient’s mental health to provide mental health screening, appropriate psychological counseling with aiming of reducing the severity of depression, anxiety and stress of patients, and the result is to enhancing quality of life for epilepsy patients.
