Abstract
Objective: To develop and culturally adapt a cognitive stimulation protocol for patients with dementia at the Dementia Care Unit, Military Hospital 175, and to evaluate its preliminary feasibility.
Methods: The Formative Method for Adapting Psychotherapy (FMAP) was applied to the Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) program developed by Spector. A total of 14 patients with mild-to-moderate dementia participated, divided into three pilot CST sessions. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed through observation and feedback from patients, caregivers, and healthcare staff.
Results: A CST-based protocol was developed and culturally adapted to the Vietnamese context, incorporating familiar content, simple materials, low cost, and high accessibility. All patients completed the sessions with no dropouts. Observations and post-session interviews indicated that patients were engaged, caregivers were satisfied, and healthcare staff highly valued the feasibility and applicability of the program.
Conclusion: The culturally adapted CST-based protocol demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability at Military Hospital 175, providing a foundation for larger-scale studies to evaluate clinical effectiveness.
