Abstract

Objective
- To review the results of status epilepticus control with intravenous Valproate at the Neurology Center - Bach Mai Hospital from March 1, 2024, to November 30, 2025.
- To analyze several factors related to the efficacy of status epilepticus control with intravenous Valproate.
Subjects and Methods: A retrospective and prospective descriptive study was conducted on 38 patients diagnosed with status epilepticus at the Neurology Center, Bach Mai Hospital, from March 1, 2024 to November 30, 2025.
Results: In our study on status epilepticus (SE) patients, the mean age was 55.7 ± 20.8 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1. A history of cerebrovascular disease is the most common etiologies, consistent with the finding that structural lesions are a major risk factor for SE in adults. Regarding treatment efficacy, the seizure cessation rate with Valproate in our study was 50% (19/38 patients). Analysis of factors related to treatment response showed that the group of patients with moderate-to-severe altered consciousness (GCS < 13 points) and the group requiring treatment in the Intensive Care Unit had a statistically significantly higher rate of refractoriness (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Intravenous Valproate demonstrates seizure cessation efficacy in approximately half of Status Epilepticus (SE) cases. Early identification of factors prognostic of refractoriness, such as a low GCS score, is necessary for timely escalation of the treatment strategy.
